In 1903, Shamrock III was to be Sir Thomas Lipton's third challenge for the cup in five years. She was an unworthy antagonistic for "Reliance", the defender, which was the most impressive of all yachts ever to sail in the America's cup race. She had a steel mast of 196 feet, and a sail area of 16,000 sq. feet. That is 2,000 sq. feet more than the Shamrock. Charles Barr sailed "reliance" to victory in three straight races.
